A shy wallflower meets her dream man—or does she?—in the next book in New York Times bestselling author Eloisa James’ Wildes of Lindow series.

Grade: 3

This is book #5 in the Wildes of Lindow Castle series by Eloisa James. Reading books out of order doesn’t bother me, I am ok if I am missing some of the puzzle pieces that make up the overall story. If you are someone that gets annoyed that there are hints dropped in regards to other stories, don’t pick this one up if you haven’t read the others.

If ever two more introverted people were to meet in a book, I haven’t read it. Viola Astley is gut-wrenchingly afraid of large social interaction settings. As in, she pukes at large gatherings. Devin, The Duke of Wynter, loves math and spending time on mathematical equations. Everything else he can hire someone to do.

They meet at a ball, but not in the typical fashion. They both have the same idea to hide, unfortunately it happens to be in the same room and Viola overhears some not so flattering opinions of herself. When she confronts him, he realizes the impression society has of Viola is all wrong and decides she would be a perfect wife for him.

The first half of this book was charming. Fun characters, witty dialogue, cute interactions. The second half of the book was the exact opposite. There seemed to be no real plot, it was just characters moving around with no end goal. Our characters are happy by mid-book, and there really isn’t any feat they need to overcome. The second half felt like a really long epilogue.

If you’re reading the series, I’m sure getting to visit beloved characters would be enjoyable. You get to see a lot of the Wilde family and friends in this book. Go in with the understanding that the second half is just more time with the characters and don’t expect more conflict.

Bottom line: The characters were fun enough to read in the first half to make the book worth a read through.
